Junior Cert Schools Programme (JCSP)

All students follow the three-year Junior Cycle Programme; however, some students decide to participate in the JCSP also. The JCSP is designed to help schools and teachers develop a student-centred approach to the Junior Cycle Programme. JCSP is based on the concept that all young people are capable of real success in school and that they engage in a positive experience of school if the conditions are made favourable. A school-wide approach to literacy and numeracy development is also part of the framework.

The JCSP programme is an extension of the Junior Cycle programme; students complete the same exams as their peers and receive the same certification from the Department of Education. The certification includes a list of the subjects taken in the examination and the grades achieved in these subjects.

In addition to this certificate, JCSP students also receive an individualized “student profile.” This is a profile of the skills, knowledge and achievements of each student. It covers a broad range of personal and social skills, as well as their academic achievements.

Students who participate in the JCSP receive regular numeracy and literacy classes, which enhance their learning experience.

In addition, students will have project work to complete in Mathematics, English, Irish, Science, Physical Education and Art.

The JCSP programme aims to help students to develop organisational and life skills; achieve academic success; and enhances their numeracy and literacy skills. Students will also partake in school trips and initiatives, such as bike safety, spelling bee, reading initiative, peer teaching with 4th year students etc., as part of the programme.

Examples of annual initiatives include:

  • Paired Maths
  • Storytelling
  • Paired Reading
  • Outdoor Pursuits Activity
  • Who wants to be a Millionaire (Word & Maths)
  • Céilí Mór
