Drop Everything and Read

Junior Cycle students participated in the ‘drop everything and read’ initiative recently. The idea is that at a set time everyone stops what he or she is doing and reads for fifteen minutes. It is a shared experience and gets people talking about books and reading while conveying a strong message that the school believes in reading.

Wellbeing Week

Wellbeing Week takes place from 2nd March – 6th March 2020. Students will participate in a variety of activities during the week to remind them to look after their mind and body; and to connect with others.

Junior Ladies Football

Congratulations to our Junior Ladies Football Team who travelled to Solohead GAA pitch on Wednesday 11th March to play Rice College Ennis in the semifinal of the junior cup championship with the girls coming out deserving winners on the day after extra time on a score line of St Declan’s 7-3 Rice College 3-4. On the day captain Ellen Boylan had a fantastic game in midfield and was an inspirational leader for the team supported by the rest of her defence team who all played fantastic football. Both teams got stuck in from the word go and played a grueling 60 mins in terrible conditions. Kaci Brazil got the first 2 goals of the game and set us off on our winning ways, but this was short lived as Rice college fought back and got 4 consecutive points and two goals. Ellie Skehan our super sub got a fantastic goal and Emma Keating scored a point to level the game at full time St Declan’s 3-1 Rice College 2-4. The girls showed their fight, determination and never give up attitude in extra time when they all played as a team and supported each other. The defence in both the backs and the forwards was unreal. The scores then came after fantastic support from all the forwards with Ellie getting another goal and three amazing goals came from Ava Fitzpatrick and points from Jayne Kirwan and Ellen Boylan sealed the win. Our goalie on the day Emma Kelly played a great game as this was her first day playing goalie for the school team and she did not let the occasion get to her. She did all she was asked to do. The final whistle blew, and St. Declan’s were the deserving winners after playing their toughest game this year. This was the icing on the cake and the girls are now into the Junior cup final. We wish all the team and management the best of luck in this quest.

Ladies Football

Congratulations to our Senior Ladies Football Team who travelled to Bansha GAA pitch recently to play Mary Immaculate, Lisdoonvarna in the semi-final of the Senior Cup Championship with the girls coming out deserving winners on the day on a score line of St. Declan’s 2-10 Lisdoonvarna 2-8. On the day captain Caoimhe Hassett had a fantastic game at centre back and was an inspirational leader for the team supported by the rest of the defenders who all played fantastic football. Shiona Dunphy had a great game in mid field and scored 2 points. Ellen Boylan drove forward when needed and got some fantastic scores along with Jayne Kirwan. Mia Lenihan got fouled in the last few minutes of the game and Hayley Phelan stepped up calmly and buried the ball in the back of the net. This was the icing on the cake and the girls are now into the Senior Cup final which will hopefully be played after mid-term. We wish all the team and management the best of luck in this quest.

St. Declan’s CC 2-2 Greenhill Carrick

St Declan’s travelled to Rathgormack to take on Carrick in their last group game of the year. The Kilmac girls started strong with lots of the ball attacking the Carrick goal. Ciara Ross went on a great run from a defending corner and won herself a free 25 yards out. Ella Cotter stepped up to take the free but narrowly missed. Another free kick won by Ciara was struck by Kaci Brazil but couldn’t find the back of the net. St. Declan’s were caught sleeping and Carrick got a loose ball and scored from close range against the run of play. St. Declan’s didn’t drop their heads and came close to scoring from a corner and Kaci Brazil had a free that rattled the crossbar but couldn’t find the net. Eventually their just reward came when a free kick from Brazil was passed into the back of the net by Niamh Halley. Shortly afterwards Ciara Ross ran through midfield and having won a free, stepped up to take it. Ross found the top corner with a beautifully struck ball. The teams went in 2-1 at half time. The second half started with lots of battling in midfield but neither team could break the back line. Then Carrick got a strike on goal that was well saved by Aoife Sheehan. The resulting corner ended up being chested into the goal. The teams were now all even. Straight after the whistle, Kaci Brazil sent Ella Cotter through on goal but her shot went narrowly wide. The game ended in dead lock with a great team performance. Well done to all the girls who have trained well all year.

Munster Colleges- Senior hurling

Having qualified for the quarterfinals of this year’s championship our senior hurlers made their exit at the hands of a very strong Mallow team. The game was played at Solohead in Tipperary. The opening exchanges were evenly matched and mid-way through the first half the scores were level. In a two-minute spell the Cork side scored two goals to put them in the driving seat and they never looked back. They added a third goal before the break and the score at half time was 3-7 to 0-6.

St. Declan’s opened the second period brightly and scored the first two points, but it was the excellent full forward for Mallow who ended the game as a contest when he scored his sides fourth goal ten minutes into the second half. The lads battled to the end but were beaten on a score line of 5-15 to 0-11. The panel included: Dermot Behan, James Power, Mike Hally, Tadhg Power. Panel Cian Browne, Darragh Farrelly, Peter Walsh, Dermot Behan, Jack Boylan, Tadhg Power, David Flynn, Cian Bolger, James Power, Mike Hally, Declan Keane, Pa Skehan, Barry Power, Aaron Cheaty, John McArthur, Keith Millea, Jack O Donnell, Mike O’Brien, Shane Reade, Eoin Fitzgerald.

Final score:St. Declan’s Community College - 4

Presentation Secondary School, Clonmel - 3

St. Declan’s travelled to Clonmel with a large squad on a bitter cold morning recently. With the wind at their backs the Kilmac girls started well, retaining possession and threatening the goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. Kaci Brazil split the defense with a well measured pass into Sophie Power but unfortunately nothing came of it. The Presentation had their first chance of the game ten minutes in with a narrow miss. This served as a wakeup call for the St Declan’s girls and Brazil linked up well with her midfield partner, Ella Cotter. Cotter got a good shot on goal which was well saved, and Brazil got a long range shot off that went narrowly wide. From the resulting goal kick Ella Cotter pounced and slotted home well inside the box. Minutes later Kaci Brazil used the wind assistance to score a spectacular free kick from 40 yards out. Brazil was not finished yet; she got another opportunity from just outside the box. With no one closing her down she struck again slotting home her second goal of the game. The Presentation responded quickly finding the net from close range and almost got a second soon after only for a great save by Aoife Sheehan. Ciara Ross got her just reward from battling down the right side when a scramble at the goal mouth fell to her and she found the back of the net. The whistle went shortly after this and St Declan’s went in 4-1 at half time. Playing against the wind, St Declan’s struggled to gain momentum and Presentation found the net again. Rotating subs and ensuring that all the players had time on the pitch meant players had to adapt to new positions and partnerships. Clonmel found the net for the third time near the end but thankfully St. Declan’s held out for the win. It was a great team performance in tough conditions.

Camogie

Our U16.5 camogie team played Waterpark College in the semi-final of the South A Cup at John Mitchel’s GAA Grounds recently. Conditions were wet and blustery, but this didn’t deter the Kilmacthomas side who dominated from the throw-in and never looked back. When the final whistle blew St. Declan’s had deservedly earned themselves a place in the final against Gaelcholaiste Mhuire A.G. North Monastery, Cork later this month.

Final score: St. Declan’s C.C. 6-11

Waterpark College 1-00

Panel: Zoe Mackey, Jean O’ Loughlin, Ellie Swift, Katie Condon, Ciara Harris, Jane Kirwan, Kayleigh McGrath, Ellen Boylan (Captain), Ruth O’ Regan, Lucy Mulcahy, Bevin Bowdren, Niamh Hally, Kaci Brazil, Ava Fitzpatrick, Hannah McGrath, Samantha Doyle.

Well done on another great performance girls and the very best of luck in the final!

Cross Country

St. Declan’s had over 30 students competing at the county cross country championship in St. Augustine’s recently. The day started off extremely well with Hannah McGrath coming third in the minor girl’s event and her team finishing third in the team event. The minor boys were up next with another strong performance finishing in third place in the team event. The junior girls were missing some strong athletes due to a football match happening the same day, but they still ran very well. The junior boys won the minor event last year and were hoping to repeat the performance. Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out but brought home a silver medal. Andrew Weldon ran the intermediate race with a very respectable performance. Matteo Mary cruised home to victory with a very impressive run in the senior boy’s event. Best of luck to all of the athletes who will compete in east Munster’s in two weeks’ time.

Munster Colleges Senior Hurling

St. Declan’s C. C. 3-9

Kilmallock 2-11

St. Declan’s qualified for the quarter-finals of the Munster College’s C hurling by virtue of an exciting and hard fought one-point win over gallant Kilmallock team from Limerick. The early exchanges were even but it was the Limerick side who were more dominant and by midway through the half they led 1-4 to 0-2. Archie Walsh made a darting run through the middle of the Kilmallock defence before being fouled inside the area. James Power stepped up and dispatched the resulting penalty. The Limerick side tacked on two further points but just on the stroke of half time Declan Keane passed the ball across the Kilmallock square and it was pulled to the net to leave the scores level at half time St. Declan’s 2-3 Kilmallock 1-6.

The second half followed the pattern of the first with the exchanges fast and furious. With about ten minutes to go the game was in the melting pot. Kilmallock scored an excellent goal to leave them three points clear, and to add to the difficulties Jack Boylan was sent off for a second bookable defence. The Kilmac boys were not for giving in and a speculative shot by David Flynn following a run from wing back was deflected into the net by the Goalkeeper. The sides were level. With about three minutes remaining James Power scored an excellent free. There followed some frantic defence and there was a huge sense of relief when the referee blew the final whistle to see St. Declan’s emerge as one-point winners.

This was a real test of character for the Kilmac side, but they never gave in and now face Mallow in the Munster Quarter final.

Ryan Hennessy made it 2-0 shortly after the break before Devin Keogh made it 3-0 10 mins from time. Tralee pulled one back before Devin Keogh restored St. Declan’s three goal advantage. The home side added a second on the last minute to leave it 4-2 at full time.

Scorers: Ciara Sheahan 1-09, Ava Fitzpatrick 3-04, Shíona Dunphy 0-02.

Our senior team recently played Christ King School, Cork in Round 1 of the Cup. Despite missing several of our key players, the girls dominated from the throw-in and never looked back. This was the team’s first outing and for some players it was their first appearance in a senior jersey for St. Declan’s. However, the team blended seamlessly on the day and the spirit, determination and work rate displayed by this bunch of girls was nothing short of outstanding. St. Declan’s will now play Rathkeale, Limerick away in the quarter final. Best of luck to the team and their mentors.
